How Often Should You Clean or Restore Memorials?

When you invest in a memorial for a loved one, you want it to last as long as possible. It’s a source of comfort and remembrance for the people who knew them. Unfortunately, harsh weather can put a lot of extra wear and tear on your loved one’s gravestone. Many people make it a habit to clean and restore their loved ones’ memorials—but how often should you do it?

Here’s how and when to clean or restore a memorial.

Cleaning a memorial

You can clean a memorial any time you have a few spare minutes—but keep in mind that if the material is particularly delicate, like marble, you’ll need to be extra gentle. All it takes is a little hot, soapy water, a soft brush or cloth, cotton swabs and fresh water.

Before you begin, inspect the memorial for any cracks or imperfections. Sometimes cleaning a memorial can worsen a problem, depending on the material. If the surface looks unblemished, remove as much grass, dirt and debris as you can. Then use the hot, soapy water and your brush to gently scrub away the rest of the dirt. If you need to clean out any engraving or detail raised designs, use the cotton swabs to do so.

When you’re finished, rinse the headstone with fresh water and dry. You may want to seal the memorial with bronze sealant or wax to keep it looking fresh.

Memorial restoration services

If the memorial has undergone a significant round of wear and tear, you may need to engage professional restoration services. Professional headstone restorers can perform a variety of services, from resealing the monument to re-engraving or etching the design.

While you can clean a memorial just about any time you go to visit, you’ll need to talk to one of the restoration experts about how often a monument can be restored. In some cases, there may be a finite number of times a particular stone or plaque can be re-etched or otherwise altered.

At Harsha Monument Co., we’ll be glad to take a look at your memorial. We’ll perform a thorough inspection to see if there are any elements missing. Then we’ll perform any necessary replacements, restore and reseal the memorial so it looks better than ever.

Monument replacement

In rare cases, your loved one’s memorial may need to be replaced entirely. This is particularly common when the memorial is old or is made with soft, porous materials, like marble. You may want to replace it entirely, choosing a material that stands the test of time. Bronze and granite are excellent options in this situation, but if you need help choosing a new material, make sure to ask the team at your memorial maker company.
